Afghanistan’s fast bowlers, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Allah Gjanfar, delivered exceptional performances, leading Afghanistan to a six-wicket victory against South Africa in the first ODI. Farooqi took 4 wickets for 35 runs, while Gjanfar claimed 3 wickets for 20 runs. This is Afghanistan’s first-ever ODI win against South Africa, marking a historic achievement.
South Africa’s batting lineup crumbled against Afghanistan’s bowling attack, getting bowled out for just 106 runs in 33.3 overs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. This is the first time Afghanistan has bowled out South Africa in a limited-overs match.
Naib and Omarzai Lead Afghanistan to Victory
Chasing a target of 107, Afghanistan reached 107/4 in 26 overs to secure the win. Gulbadin Naib played an aggressive knock, scoring an unbeaten 34 off 27 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Azmatullah Omarzai contributed with 25 not out from 36 balls, hitting two sixes. For South Africa, Bjorn Fortuin took two wickets, while Lungi Ngidi claimed one.
Afghanistan’s chase did not start well, losing three wickets with only 38 runs on the board. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi was also dismissed for 16, leaving Afghanistan at a precarious position. However, Naib and Omarzai put together a crucial 47-run partnership for the fifth wicket, ensuring a comfortable victory.
South Africa’s Struggles Continue
South Africa came into this series looking to bounce back after defeating India in the T20 World Cup final in June. However, their struggles in limited-overs cricket continued as Farooqi and Gjanfar shattered their hopes. Despite a half-century from Wiaan Mulder, who scored 52 off 84 balls with five fours and a six, South Africa was bundled out for their fourth-lowest ODI score.
Mulder was the only standout performer in South Africa’s batting lineup, as no other batsman could make a significant contribution. Afghanistan’s bowlers dominated the game, with South Africa barely crossing 100 runs.
Farooqi Reaches 100 International Wickets
Fazalhaq Farooqi’s brilliant performance in this match also saw him reach a personal milestone. By taking 4 wickets, he completed 100 international wickets for Afghanistan. He bowled 7 overs, including a maiden, and dismissed key players such as Reeza Hendricks (9), Tony de Zorzi (11), Captain Aiden Markram (2), and Wiaan Mulder.
Afghanistan has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series with this victory. The second match will be played on Friday at the same venue in Sharjah, and Afghanistan will look to seal the series with another strong performance.
