IPL Mega Auction 2024
The countdown to IPL Season 18 has officially begun, and some exciting updates keep team owners on their toes. The BCCI has been working hard to make several big announcements before the upcoming IPL season. So, what are these announcements, and how will they affect the IPL 2024 Mega Auction? Let’s dive into the top five updates that you need to know,
- IPL 2024 Mega Auction Dates Finalized
The dates for the IPL 2024 Mega Auction have been set! Although an official announcement is yet to come, reports suggest that the auction will occur on Friday and Saturday, December 20 and 21, 2024. Team India will be on their Australia tour during this time, and the auction will happen just before the Christmas holidays. The BCCI has already started preparing for the auction, and the event is expected to be held in Bengaluru or Mumbai, as both cities offer winter-friendly weather.
- Player Retention Policy Announcement Coming Soon
One of the key highlights of the IPL auction is the Player Retention Policy. The rules regarding how many players each team can retain and the buy-back options through the Right to Match (RTM) card are expected to be announced by the end of September 2024. BCCI’s AGM is scheduled for September 29, 2024, when important decisions regarding the auction will be finalized. While some teams have requested the retention of up to five players, the BCCI has decided that a maximum of four players can be retained.
- Auction in November? Not Happening
Rumors suggested that the IPL auction might occur in November, but those reports were false. The BCCI has always planned for a December auction, allowing domestic players to participate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which will be held from November 23 to December 15, 2024. This allows players to showcase their talent before the auction.
- Maximum of 4 Players for Retention
BCCI has clarified that teams can only retain up to four players. Some teams had requested the option to retain five players, but BCCI has firmly rejected this. The specifics of how many Indian and overseas players can be retained are yet to be officially announced. Additionally, teams can use two RTM cards: one for an Indian player and one for an overseas player.
- Team Purse to Increase for Auction
The team purse for the IPL 2024 auction is expected to increase. Reports suggest that the minimum purse could be ₹120 crores, possibly going up to ₹125 crores or even more. Teams have consistently requested a higher purse, and BCCI will likely agree. Another important update is that the salary cap on retained players will be removed. Teams will now have complete control over the salary they offer to their retained players.
These five major updates will shape the IPL 2024 Mega Auction and have team owners eagerly awaiting the official announcements. With significant changes in retention policies, the auction purse, and player salaries, the IPL Season 18 promises to be one of the most exciting editions yet.
